5-Star vs 3-Star AC: Does a 5-Star AC Cool Faster? | AC Buying Guide

No, a 5-star AC does not cool faster than a 3-star AC of the same tonnage. The star rating tells you how much electricity the AC uses, not how quickly it cools your room. A 5-star AC gives you the same cooling for less power, so it saves money on your electricity bill. How fast a room cools depends on the AC’s capacity (tonnage), its airflow and its Turbo mode, and on the room itself.

What does the star rating on an AC actually mean?

The star label on every AC in India comes from the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE). It shows how energy efficient the AC is. The number behind the stars is called ISEER, which simply means how much cooling you get for every unit of electricity you use. A higher ISEER means a better star rating and a lower electricity bill.

Think of it like the mileage of a bike. A bike with better mileage does not go faster. It just goes further on the same petrol. In the same way, a 5-star AC does not cool faster. It just uses less electricity to do the same job.

Do star ratings change in 2026?

Yes. From 1 January 2026, BEE made the rules stricter for split ACs. As widely reported, a split AC now needs an ISEER of about 5.6 or more to get 5 stars, and 3 stars means an ISEER of about 4.3 to 4.99. This means an AC that was sold as 5-star in 2025 may be rated 4-star under the new rules.

Tip: Do not compare only the stars. Check the ISEER number and the validity dates printed on the BEE label. Between two ACs with the same stars, the one with the higher ISEER uses less power.

Do a 3-star and a 5-star AC cool at the same speed?

If both have the same tonnage and the same cooling capacity, yes, they cool at about the same speed. For example, two 1.5 ton inverter ACs can both be rated for the same cooling output. The only difference is that the 5-star one uses roughly 20 to 25 percent less electricity to deliver it.

Some advertisements say 5-star ACs cool faster, but the numbers on the label do not support this. If you want a faster cooling AC, look at the points in the next section instead of the stars.

What really decides how fast your AC cools?

  • Right tonnage for the room: This matters the most. An AC that is too small will keep running and still struggle to cool a room on a hot Hyderabad afternoon.
  • Inverter compressor: An inverter AC runs at high speed first to cool the room quickly, and then slows down to hold the temperature. This is also why inverter ACs save power.
  • Turbo mode: Turbo or power-cool mode pushes the AC to its maximum for a short time. Use it for the first 15 to 30 minutes, then switch back to normal mode, because it uses more power.
  • Airflow and air throw: An AC that throws air further and moves more air cools a long or large room faster.
  • The room itself: A top-floor room, a room with a west-facing wall or big glass windows, and a room with many people will take longer to cool.
  • Good installation: Correct gas filling, short and well-insulated copper piping and a well-placed outdoor unit all help the AC perform at its best.
  • Clean filters: A dusty filter blocks airflow. Clean it every two to three weeks in summer.

Which tonnage should you choose?

Use this as a simple starting guide for a normal room with a standard ceiling height:

  • Up to 120 sq ft: 1 ton
  • 120 to 180 sq ft (a normal bedroom): 1.5 ton
  • 180 to 250 sq ft (a large bedroom or small hall): 1.5 to 2 ton
  • 250 sq ft and above (a living room): 2 ton or more

If the room is on the top floor, faces the afternoon sun or has large windows, think about going up by half a ton. Our team can check your room and suggest the right size, so you do not have to guess.

How much can a 5-star AC save you in Hyderabad?

Here is a simple example for a 1.5 ton inverter AC that runs about 8 hours a day:

  • A 5-star AC uses roughly 28 units less per month than a 3-star AC.
  • With electricity at about Rs 7 to Rs 9 per unit, that is a saving of around Rs 200 to Rs 260 every month.
  • Over a season of 6 to 8 months, you save roughly Rs 1,400 to Rs 2,100 a year.
  • A 5-star AC usually costs Rs 7,000 to Rs 12,000 more, so the extra cost comes back in about 4 to 6 years. A good AC lasts 10 years or more.

These are approximate figures. Your actual savings depend on how many hours you use the AC, the temperature you set, your room and your electricity tariff. In Hyderabad, AC units usually fall in the higher tariff slabs, which is one more reason a 5-star AC pays off for people who use it a lot.

Should you buy a 3-star or a 5-star AC?

Choose a 5-star inverter AC if:

  • You use the AC every night in your bedroom for 8 hours or more.
  • You work from home and run the AC through the day.
  • The room is on the top floor or gets a lot of afternoon sun.

Choose a 3-star inverter AC if:

  • It is for a guest room or a room you use only for a few hours a day.
  • You want a lower purchase price and your usage is light.

In both cases, an AC of the correct tonnage with proper installation will serve you better than a bigger star rating on a wrongly sized AC.

Simple tips to cool your room faster and save power

  • Keep doors and windows closed while the AC is running.
  • Set the temperature to 24 degrees. BEE recommends this, and every extra degree you raise it saves roughly 6 percent electricity.
  • Use curtains or blinds on windows that get direct sun.
  • Switch off Turbo mode once the room is cool.
  • Get your AC serviced before every summer.

Frequently asked questions

Does a 5-star AC cool faster than a 3-star AC?

No. The star rating shows energy efficiency, not cooling speed. Two ACs with the same tonnage and capacity cool at about the same speed. The 5-star one just uses less electricity.

Is a 5-star AC worth the extra money?

It is worth it if you use your AC for many hours a day, such as in a bedroom or a work-from-home room. For rooms used only a few hours a day, a 3-star inverter AC can be the better choice.

What is ISEER?

ISEER is the number that shows how much cooling an AC gives for each unit of electricity over a whole season. A higher ISEER means a more efficient AC and a lower bill.

Does setting the AC to 16 degrees cool the room faster?

No. The AC works at the same maximum speed whatever temperature you set. A very low setting only makes the AC run longer and use more power. Setting it to 24 degrees is comfortable and saves electricity.

Is a bigger tonnage AC always better?

No. An AC that is too big for the room switches on and off again and again, which can leave the room feeling damp and wastes power. Choose a tonnage that suits your room size.
